A Brief History of Fire Pits
What to blog about? Hmmm....well, how about a little lesson on the history of fire pits?
Neanderthals, (commonly referred to as cavemen), were the first people to enjoy the warmth and function of fire. From staying warm at night, to cooking over an open flame, to weaponry, these folk were the first to harness the power that comes along with natures finest element.
With the discovery of fire, containing the fire was critical to survival. Traditionally, a fire-watcher would be assigned to look after the fire to prevent it from going out, theft and from getting out of control. Historically, nomadic people would cut the turf out where the fire pit was to burn, and then, after they were ready to move on, they would replace the turf to hide any evidence of the fire.

Fire pit remains have proven to preserve a archeological information about past civilizations. Carbon dating from charcoal found in old fire pits can help estimate when certain regions were first inhabited or when cultures died out. Also, bones and seeds and other artifacts discovered in fire pits reveal the types of diets that certain people ingested during that particular time period.
"In archaeological terms fire pits are referred to as features because they can be seen and recorded as part of the site but cannot be moved without being destroyed."
Over time, fire pits have become common among outdoors men and women. Campfires are popular and must be contained and are only allowed in certain parks, so be sure to abide by local safety fire burning laws.
Today, fire pits are used in commercial and residential establishments for warmth, ambiance and a centerpiece for gathering.
