Popular Opinion States Move Your Indoors Outdoors

In an article recently published by the Northwest Indiana Times, a survey showed that people, regardless of the state of the economy, are still connecting with the outdoors more than ever.

In a 2011 study conducted by the American Society of Landscape Architects, 96% of respondents stated that outdoor lighting is somewhat or very popular this year ranking it as the most desirable outdoor feature. However, in a close second, 94% of respondents were in favor of adding a fire pit to the outdoor entertainment space.



Outdoor dining areas remain popular but respondents seek to expand their outdoor living area by installing a fire pit with benches and seating for conversation and entertaining.

Other interesting trends were the overall increase in popularity for sustainable, low maintenance landscaping. Features including rain barrels and drip irrigation as a form of water conservation for lawns is gaining traction and interest. Collecting rain water makes for a free source of watering your lawn where drip irrigation systems at the root can replace traditional sprinkler systems and are more efficient and cost-effective.
